Mental Health Firearms Reporting Training Offered

The Department of Justice (DOJ), Bureau of Firearms (BOF) will conduct free two-hour training sessions across the state, beginning May 29, to assist hospitals in complying with AB 302 (Chapter 344, Statutes of 2010), which goes into effect July 1. The law, which amends Section 8103 (f)(1) of the Welfare and Institutions Code, requires that an electronic report be submitted to DOJ BOF whenever a patient is determined to be a danger to him/herself or others, and is admitted into an LPS 5150-designated facility. The report must to be made immediately to DOJ on the date of admission using the newly developed Internet-based Mental Health Reporting System (MHRS). To access MHRS and use the new system, each facility will be required to obtain a user password. A schedule of training sessions is attached. For more information, contact the BOF Training, Information and Compliance Section at (916) 227-7527.
