Medicare EHR Incentive Program Hardship Exception Deadline Approaching
Applications for eligible professionals due July 1

CHA reminds Medicare-eligible professionals (EPs) that payment adjustments will begin Jan. 1, 2016, for EPs that did not successfully participate in the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive program in 2014. Multiple and individual EPs can avoid the 2016 payment adjustment by applying for a 2016 hardship exception by July 1 at 8:59 p.m. (PT). To file a hardship exception, a Medicare-eligible professional must:

  • Show proof of a circumstance beyond the EP’s control; and
  • Explicitly outline how the circumstance significantly impaired the EP’s ability to meet meaningful use.

Supporting documentation must also be provided for certain hardship exception categories. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will review applications to determine whether or not a hardship exception should be granted. The hardship exception applications and instructions for an individual and for multiple Medicare-eligible professionals are available on the EHR Incentive Programs website. The instructions outline the types of circumstances CMS considers to be barriers to achieving meaningful use and how to apply.
