Medical Board Reminds Hospitals of Reporting Requirement

The Medical Board of California reminds hospitals that they are required to report each instance of a maternity patient who planned to have an out-of-hospital birth but is instead transferred to a hospital by a licensed midwife. The Board has developed a reporting form and instructions available on its website. The licensed midwife is required to provide records, including prenatal records, and speak with the receiving physician about labor up to the point of the transfer. The reporting requirement may be found at Business and Professions Section 2510, and became effective on Jan. 1, 2014.
