Marketplace Enrollment Data Released for End of 2016 Open Enrollment Period

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) has released detailed data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, highlighting enrollment-related information for health insurance marketplaces during the 2016 open enrollment period. These data cover the 38 states using the HealthCare.gov enrollment and eligibility platform, as well as the 13 state-based marketplaces using their own platforms. ASPE reports that about 12.7 million individuals selected or were automatically reenrolled in marketplace plans during the 2016 open enrollment period; 1,575,340 individuals selected or were automatically reenrolled in Covered California.

Additional California-specific data reflect:

  • 425,342 (27 percent) of enrollees are new consumers.
  • 1,370,546 (87 percent) of enrollees enrolled with financial assistance.
  • 441,096 (28 percent) of enrollees are between the ages of 18-34; 33 percent are between the ages of 0-34.
  • 803,424 (51 percent) of enrollees are female; 771,916 (49 percent) are male.
  • 425,342 enrollees (27 percent) selected bronze plans; 992,465 enrollees (63 percent) selected silver plans; 78,767 enrollees (5 percent) selected gold plans; 63,013 enrollees (4 percent) selected platinum plans; and 15,754 enrollees (1 percent) selected catastrophic plans.
