Mapping Medicare Disparities Tool Now Includes Hospital Comparisons

The Mapping Medicare Disparities Tool from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health has recently been updated to include hospital comparisons. The new “Hospital View” allows users to compare quality metrics — such as avoidable hospitalizations and 30-day readmission rates — across hospitals in their communities.

The tool is designed to identify areas of disparities between subgroups of Medicare beneficiaries (e.g., racial and ethnic groups) in health outcomes, utilization and spending. It provides health outcome measures for disease prevalence, costs and hospitalization for 55 specific chronic conditions, emergency department utilization, readmissions rates, mortality rates and preventable hospitalizations. Other updates include making some views available in Spanish and the addition of cancer metrics, which allows users to view health outcomes, spending and utilization rates across cancer types.
