Mandated Minimum Wage and Wage Floors Take Effect Today

Effective today, the statewide minimum wage increases to $9 per hour. The increase affects more than just the hourly rate for non-exempt employees. The exempt employee salary floor increases to $37,440, and the minimum wage for collective bargaining overtime exemption increases to $11.70 per hour. Other state wage and hour laws tied to the minimum wage include the: 1) uniform maintenance allowance; 2) commission exemption under Wage Orders 4 and 7; 3) tool and equipment exemption; 4) meal and lodging credit; and 5) split shift premium. Hospitals should review their pay practices in these areas to ensure compliance with the new minimum wage.
