Legislation Would Create New Payment Option for Rural Emergency Acute Care

Yesterday, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) introduced the Rural Emergency Acute Care Hospital (REACH) Act, federal legislation to help ensure access to health care services in some rural communities. The REACH Act would allow critical access and prospective payment system hospitals with 50 or fewer beds to convert to rural emergency hospitals, providing only emergency care and receiving enhanced reimbursement rates of 110 percent of reasonable costs to transport patients to acute care hospitals in neighboring communities. Hospitals in California that would benefit from this legislation should reach out to Senators Boxer and Feinstein to ask for their support.
