The Joint Commission Issues FAQs on Assessing Suicide Risk

To help providers better understand standards for suicide risk assessment, The Joint Commission has published a series of frequently asked questions. The information clarifies the definition of “serious” risk and the types of patients who must be assessed, and includes details specific to inpatient psychiatric units and emergency departments.

The Joint Commission, along with a panel of experts, is in the process of assessing current recommendations to see which are appropriate to include as new or revised performance elements in the revised National Patient Safety Goal on suicide prevention. That update will be shared with providers when it becomes available.
