HQI’s ENGAGE! Program Launched

HQI’s ENGAGE! program began in late February with in-person events hosted by Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and John Muir Health. Thirty-eight California hospitals and health systems are enrolled in the evidence-based initiative to improve quality and patient safety by strengthening partnerships with patients and families. A part of HQI’s patient experience strategy, the program offers two collaborative tracks:

  • Track I, Engagement Development Collaborative, assists hospitals in establishing patient family advisory councils and other formalized avenues for engagement.
  • Track II, Engagement Community of Practice, offers advanced learning opportunities for hospitals to sustain, deepen and grow their current efforts in engagement, with a specific focus on engaging families as care partners to help ensure their loved ones’ safety. Track II also provides engagement methods and tools specific to harm areas targeted for improvement by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ HEN 2.0.

ENGAGE! is a sequel to Patients On Board, HQI’s inaugural program on patient and family engagement, delivered in collaboration with PFCC partners. Over the course of five months, through a structured implementation process supported by collaborative learning and team coaching, participating hospitals worked to develop patient/family advisory councils and/or integrate patients and families as partners on improvement teams.
