House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee Advances Bill Repealing SGR

The House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee today passed a bill repealing the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula that sets Medicare’s payment rate for physicians. The bipartisan legislation would provide a 0.5 percent update to physicians until 2018. In 2019, the SGR would be replaced by a payment system tied to quality reporting incentives. In order for the proposal to become law, the House will have to identify approximately $140 billion to fund it. While CHA supports the repeal of the SGR, it will oppose any bill that cuts payments to hospitals in order to finance the repeal.
