Hospitals May Use Statewide Medical Health Exercise to Meet New Training Requirement
Emergency preparedness conditions of participation require completion of two training exercises

Under the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) final rule on emergency preparedness conditions of participation, hospitals are expected to demonstrate completion of two required training exercises within the previous 12 months, beginning Nov. 15, 2016, through Nov. 15, 2017. Historically, California has conducted the annual Statewide Medical Health Exercise on the third Thursday of November. As such, hospitals may count their participation in the November 2016 exercise toward this new requirement, along with another exercise completed by Nov. 15, 2017.

Likewise, participation in the Nov. 16, 2017, exercise could count toward the next 12-month cycle. CHA informed the agency of this annual exercise; CMS offered guidance in its presentation at the CHA annual disaster planning conference last September.
