HHS Releases White Paper on Opioid Misuse Among Women

A new white paper from the Department of Health and Human Services examines prevention, treatment and recovery issues for women who misuse and/or overdose on opioids. Though opioid use disorder is increasing for both men and women in the U.S., this report seeks to understand the unique impact it has on women across age, race, geography and income levels. According to the report, overdose deaths from prescription painkillers increased 400 percent between 1999 and 2010, compared to 237 percent among men during the same time period. The paper also addresses promising practices for preventing opioid use disorder and identifies areas in need of further research.
