HHS Announces Oncology Care Alternative Payment Model

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) this week announced a new multi-payer payment and care delivery model using aligned financial incentives — including performance-based payments — to improve care coordination, appropriateness of care, and access to care for beneficiaries undergoing chemotherapy. The Oncology Care Model will provide support for participating physician practices to address the complex care needs of the beneficiary population receiving chemotherapy treatment and will reward practices that focus on furnishing services that specifically improve the patient experience and health outcomes. The model will count toward HHS’ recently announced goal of shifting 50 percent of traditional Medicare fee-for-service reimbursements to alternative payment models by 2018.
