HHS Announces New ACOs

The Department of Health and Human Services has announced 89 new Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), including six in California, as of July 1. Created by the Affordable Care Act, these organizations are formed by hospitals, physicians and other health care providers working together to coordinate care for Medicare patients. CMS estimates that 2.4 million Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries are being served by 154 ACOs in 40 states. Currently, 14 ACOs (including the Pioneer ACOs) are operating in California. Beginning this year, new ACO applications will be accepted annually. The application period is Aug. 1 to Sept. 6 for organizations that wish to participate beginning in January 2013.
