Health Professionals Notified About Medicare Physician Payments If SGR Bill Not Passed

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services sent a notice today advising providers that due to the pending cut to physician payments that will begin April 1, if Congress does not act, electronic claims will be held for 14 calendar days and paper claims for 29 days after the date of receipt. Any physician claims for services rendered on or before March 31 will not be affected and will be processed and paid under normal procedures. The agency will update providers by April 11 “with more information about the status of congressional action to avert the negative update and next steps.” This is not a new process, as CMS has had to hold claims previously when legislation is passed close to a deadline.
