Governor Signs Bill Permitting Midwives to Provide Perinatal Services to Low-Income Women

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed SB 407 (Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga), which will permit licensed midwives to participate in the Medi-Cal Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program. The bill also authorizes a health care provider to employ or contract with licensed midwives to provide comprehensive perinatal services, and is expected to expand access to care by giving low-income women more choices in their provider.

The bill requires both the Medical Board of California and the Department of Health Care Services to adopt or revise regulations as they determine necessary to implement this bill.
