FCC Chairman Visits Barton Health

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski recently visited Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe, one of the FCC’s Rural Health Care Pilot Program sites. Barton Health is a California Telehealth Network site whose telemedicine program has grown significantly since it began in 2007. The California Telehealth Network is a coalition working to improve health care access for medically underserved and rural Californians by providing broadband across the state. The network provides Barton with fast transmission speeds that have allowed the health care system to expand its telemedicine patient services. Barton now averages approximately 75 telehealth patient visits a month. According to Genachowski, telemedicine, like the work being done at Barton, is among the most exciting developments in broadband in the nation.
