ED Screening Tool Helps to Predict At-Risk Youth

Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have developed a set of four questions that can be quickly administered in a hospital emergency department (ED) to help identify youth at risk for attempting suicide. The researchers tested 17 questions on more than 500 patients between the age of 10 and 21 who visited an ED for either psychiatric problems or physical illness. According to the study, four questions, used as a set, stood out from the original 17 as having the most accuracy for predicting suicide attempts. The attached screening tool was developed as a result of the study. For study details, visit the NIMH website.
