DME Competitive Bidding Suspended for Two Years

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a fact sheet announcing that it expects a temporary gap for the Medicare Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies Competitive Bidding Program to last until Dec. 31, 2020.

Medicare beneficiaries may obtain equipment and supplies from any willing Medicare supplier and are not limited to suppliers designated through the competitive bidding program.

It is unclear how this change will impact Medicare beneficiaries. While many beneficiaries may experience no change in access to equipment and suppliers, some may benefit from access to a wider range of suppliers. However, CMS is also concerned that some suppliers may choose to discontinue services or engage in aggressive or misleading marketing. Additional information about the transition and beneficiary rights is included in the fact sheet.
