Diane Abbett Named CEO of California Healthcare Insurance

Diane Abbett has been named President and CEO of the health care professional liability insurance company, California Healthcare Insurance Company, Inc., RRG (CHI), and Optima Healthcare Insurance Services, CHI’s multi-line property/casualty insurance brokerage company. CHI was founded in 1988 as the first “captive” hospital professional liability insurance company in California, meaning the company is owned by those it insures. Today, CHI is considered one of the most influential carriers in the state, insuring independent community hospitals, health care systems and medical groups in California and Nevada. Abbett has served as the company’s CFO since 2001. Most recently, she has also been senior vice president of underwriting and executive vice president.

“Diane is an important reason why CHI is the longest continually operating health care professional liability insurance company in California,” said CHI/Optima Board Chair Joe Harrington, CEO of Lodi Memorial Hospital. “She is a strong and innovative leader and as health care evolves and changes, Diane will continue CHI’s history of success while meeting the future needs of health care institutions.”

Abbett succeeds Jeffry Sousa, who recently retired from CHI/Optima after serving as CEO since 1997.
