DHCS Renames Medi-Cal Initiative

The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has renamed its multi-year initiative to improve health outcomes and quality of life for California’s Medi-Cal beneficiaries. Effective immediately, the program previously known as “California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal” will be called “Medi-Cal Healthier California for All.”

According to DHCS, the name change creates a clear alignment with Gov. Newsom’s platform to build a “California for All,” as well as the long history and public familiarity with the Medi-Cal name for California’s version of the Medicaid program.

As a broad-based effort to transform the Medi-Cal delivery system, program, and payment structure, the initiative incorporates innovations that have been successfully tested through the state’s federal 1115 Waivers, such Whole Person Care Pilots, health homes, the Coordinated Care Initiative, and others.

Last month, CHA submitted comments on its proposals, informed by the experience of California’s hospitals and post-acute care providers under the current system.
