DHCS Adds 2 New Measures to PPC Reporting, Ends Grace Period

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) hosted a stakeholder webinar yesterday on new reporting requirements for provider-preventable conditions (PPCs). DHCS informed stakeholders that the “grace period” for reporting PPCs ended Oct. 10. All Medi-Cal reimbursed health care providers must report PPCs retroactive to the effective date of July 1, 2012. In addition, DHCS added two new measures to the original reporting requirements: 1) surgical site infection following cardiac implantable electronic device procedures; 2) iatrogenic pneumothorax following venous catheterization. Frequently asked questions on PPC reporting are available at www.dhcs.ca.gov/individuals/Pages/AI_PPC.aspx. Slides from the webinar will soon be available on the DHCS website. For questions regarding PPC reporting, contact DHCS at PPCHCAC@dhcs.ca.gov. For more information, see attached All Facilities Letter issued to hospitals.
