Covered California Receives $674 Million Federal Grant

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $1.5 billion in grants to states building health insurance exchanges, including $674 million to California. The grant will allow the state’s exchange — Covered California — to begin an extensive marketing campaign to publicize the various health plan options available to Californians on Jan. 1, 2014. The grant money will also go toward creating a web portal where consumers can shop for insurance plans. In addition, Covered California will use the federal money to help fund operations through January 2015, after which the exchange must be financially self-sufficient. The grant brings the total amount of federal funds received by Covered California to nearly $1 billion.
