Covered California Health Plans Extend Payment Deadline to Jan. 15
New web page provides instructions for making first month’s premium payment

Covered California has announced that its 11 health insurance companies have unanimously agreed to extend the Jan. 6 deadline for consumers to submit payment for their first month’s premium to Jan. 15. Payment for coverage taking effect Jan. 1 must be in the possession of the health insurance companies by Jan. 15, rather than postmarked or in transit. Health insurance companies emphasize this is a one-time payment deadline extension, and that subsequent payments for coverage are due at the beginning of each month.

Covered California has also launched a new web page that gives consumers instructions for making their first month’s premium payment. On the home page of CoveredCa.com, a “How to Pay” button has been added that links consumers to each company’s contact information and process for making payments by phone, by mail or online. If enrollees receive an invoice from their insurance company, they should follow its instructions for payment. However, if they haven’t received notification or an invoice from their insurer, they should contact the insurer, using information from Covered California’s “I’ve Enrolled — How Do I Pay?” web page. Pediatric dental plans in the exchange have separate invoices and accounts. Payment for all plans in the individual market must be submitted to the insurance plan issuer. However, for employers who choose to enroll their employees in one of the exchange’s SHOP plans, payments must be made to Covered California.
