Covered California Board to Hold First Meeting of the Year
Recently released ‘bridge plan’ proposal tops agenda

The board of Covered California, the state’s health exchange, will hold its first meeting of the year Jan. 17 in Los Angeles. An important item on the agenda is Covered California’s recently released brief on an affordable option — a “bridge plan” — for individuals with incomes between 139 percent and 200 percent of the federal poverty level. The brief provides three recommendations to implement this option within Covered California rather than create a separate state basic health plan. The recommendations include allowing Medi-Cal managed care plans to provide a bridge plan with premiums negotiated through Covered California’s selective contracting process; supporting state legislation and seeking federal approval for the bridge plan; and streamlining the qualified health plan certification process and other administrative requirements for Medi-Cal managed care plans. For details on the recommendations, see attached brief. Also attached is a meeting agenda, which includes information on accessing the meeting via webcast.
