Covered California Board Adopts Performance Standards for Health Plans, Customer Service Centers
Exchange finalizes several initiatives, defers action on supplemental benefits

On May 23, the Covered California Board adopted performance standards for its customer service operations as well as for its approved health plans, including customer service, operations and quality standards. In other actions, the board decided to defer a decision on supplemental benefits until its June 20 meeting; adopted a resolution to finalize and submit to the Office of Administrative Law an emergency regulation package concerning fingerprinting and criminal record checks; and adopted a resolution to establish a partnership with the Choosing Wisely® Campaign, an initiative that supports physician efforts to help patients make effective care choices. 

During his Executive Director’s report, Peter V. Lee announced that Covered California has hired Weber Shandwick, a leading global public relations firm with significant experience in health care marketing, to develop and implement a creative marketing and paid media campaign through April 2015, and that Covered California will retain Ogilvy Public Relations to assist with media relations and community outreach. Covered California staff also provided updates on the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP); the California Healthcare Eligibility, Enrollment, and Retention System (CalHEERS); outreach, marketing and education grant program funding; legislation; and the Covered California 2013-14 budget. The board had originally planned to take action on the Assisters Program regulations but decided to defer action until its June 20 meeting.
