Congressional Budget Office Releases Summary of Economic Outlook
Projects federal budget through 2026

The Congressional Budget Office has released the attached summary of budget and economic outlook projections from 2016 to 2026. The report predicts that the federal budget deficit will increase for the first time since 2009, in proportion to the size of the economy. The projected cumulative deficit between 2017 and 2026 is $9.4 trillion, which would drive debt to 86 percent of the gross domestic product by 2026 — slightly more than twice the average over the past 50 years. Federal spending for major health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and exchange subsidies is anticipated to account for 60 percent of the growth in federal mandatory spending.
