CMS Withdraws November Blood Glucose Monitor Guidance
Responds to hospital concerns

Following public comments and concerns, including those raised by CHA and the American Hospital Association in a meeting on Jan. 28, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has withdrawn Survey & Certification Memorandum 15-11, addressing the appropriate use of blood glucose monitors at the point of care. Therefore, the November 2014 memo is no longer in effect. Instead, CMS has reissued it as draft guidance with additional proposed changes and is seeking comments. Having reviewed the draft guidance and believing the current revisions to be inadequate, CHA will continue its advocacy with both the Food and Drug Administration and CMS on this important issue.

CHA is in the process of soliciting input from members on the draft revisions and will issue a draft comment letter for member use in the coming weeks. CMS has not offered a deadline for comments but notes that it will schedule additional forums to solicit input. Additional comments can be emailed to LabExcellence@cms.hhs.gov.
