CMS Revises Guidance Regarding Meaningful Use Hardship Exemptions

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued revised guidance about how Medicare-participating providers and hospitals can apply for meaningful use hardship exemptions. To avoid a payment penalty in fiscal year 2015, hospitals must apply for a hardship exception by midnight on April 1, 2014. Hardship categories include vendor delays in 2014 electronic health record (EHR) certification. Applications should be emailed to ehrhardship@provider-resources.com or faxed to (814) 464-0147. CMS urges providers and hospitals that are new to the program in 2014 but unable to implement 2014 certified EHRs to apply for a hardship exemption earlier to avoid payment penalties in 2015. CMS decisions on hardship exceptions will be final and cannot be appealed. Approved exceptions will be valid for one year. For more information, visit www.cms.gov.
