CMS Releases Fact Sheet on Administrative Simplification

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released a new fact sheet on administrative simplification standards, which are designed to save time and costs across the health care system by streamlining paperwork. Developed as a requirement under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, the standards aim to simplify administrative tasks and streamline manual processes. Types of standards include:

  • Transactions for pharmacy and health care administrative information, including claims
  • Operating rules to support the standard transactions
  • Unique identifiers for health plans, providers and employers
  • Code sets for clinical diagnoses and procedures
