CMS Releases 2012 Hospital Charge Data and Tools to Increase Transparency

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has updated hospital inpatient and outpatient data, first released last spring. The latest update provides charge data from 2012 for Medicare fee-for-service patients, including a comparison of average charges for services that may be provided in connection with the 100 most common Medicare inpatient stays, as well as outpatient procedures. CHA encourages members to review their data, which is available on the CMS website.

CMS has also launched new tools aimed at increasing transparency of Medicare payments and making the charge data more useful to stakeholders and researchers. The tools include the geographic variation dashboard, presenting Medicare fee-for-service per-capita spending at the state and county levels in interactive formats and the research cohort estimate tool to help researchers and other stakeholders estimate the number of Medicare beneficiaries with certain demographic profiles or health conditions. With two years of data now available, CHA expects additional information to be released on trends and changes in both charges and utilization.
