CMS to Reevaluate Ligature Risk Enforcement, Draft New Guidance

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that it will reevaluate its recent changes to surveying hospitals for ligature risks, including drafting new guidance to clarify the definition of a ligature risk. A preliminary version will be released later this month, followed by a more comprehensive version within the next six months. Until the new guidance is released, CMS has directed accrediting organizations to use their judgement in identifying existence and severity of ligature and safety risk deficiencies. CHA will share the guidance in CHA News when it is released.
