CMS Issues Updated Hospital-Specific Comparative Data Reports to IPFs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has made available the second release of free, hospital-specific comparative data reports for inpatient psychiatric facilities (IPFs) nationwide. The Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report (PEPPER) provides hospital-specific data statistics for Medicare discharges that may be at risk for improper Medicare payments. Facilities can use the data to support internal auditing and monitoring activities. PEPPER is the only free report comparing an IPF’s Medicare billing practices with other IPFs in the state, Medicare administrative contractor or fiscal intermediary jurisdiction and the nation.

CMS has contracted with TMF Health Quality Institute to develop and distribute the reports. According to CMS, IPF distinct-part units of short-term acute-care hospitals should have received PEPPERs electronically by March 23 (via QualityNet to the STACH QualityNet administrators and those with the PEPPER recipient role). Hard copies are being shipped (beginning March 30) via FedEx to freestanding IPFs. For more information, including a sample PEPPER for IPFs, training resources and an IPF PEPPER User’s Guide, go to PEPPERresources.org.
