CMS Issues Guidance on Sequestration Adjustments for Survey and Certification

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Center for Clinical Standards and Quality/Survey and Certification Group has issued a memorandum to state survey agency directors regarding funding reductions from sequestration. The memo outlines survey and certification adjustments that will accommodate sequestration with as little impact on the public as possible. According to CMS, adjustments will focus on protecting the state agencies’ ability to continue onsite complaint investigations and surveys of existing providers while reducing expenses, suspending workload additions, reducing time spent on lower risk areas and reducing CMS central office services. Sequestration cuts reduced the overall fiscal year (FY) 2013 survey and certification budget by 5 percent — approximately $19 million — from FY2012.
