CMS to Host Webinar on HCAHPS Survey, Pain Management and Opioid Misuse

The Quality Reporting Center at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will hold a national web meeting Jan. 26 to review the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey methodology and discuss stakeholder concerns about pain management and prescription opioid misuse. The meeting is free and open to the public, and registration is available online.

While the HCAHPS survey has become a major driving force behind changes in health care delivery, concerns have been raised about its potential unintended effect of promoting inappropriate opioid prescribing. As CMS brings this issue to the forefront for discussion, CHA and the Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) encourage hospitals to participate. CHA and HQI have previously addressed similar perceptions of conflict with safe prescribing practices in California, particularly in the context of emergency medicine.

The web meeting, The HCAHPS Survey, Pain Management and Opioid Misuse: The CMS Perspective, will discuss the HCAHPS survey’s rationale for its pain management dimension and the impact on value-based purchasing payments.
