CMS to Host Dry Run Call on Heart Failure and Pneumonia Measures
Dry run for HCAPHS star rating systems also announced

As an educational component of its “dry run” for measures in the hospital inpatient quality reporting program, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will host a national provider call on heart failure and pneumonia payment measures Sept. 16 from noon – 1:30 p.m. (PT). The call will present hospitals with an overview of the measures and guidance on interpretation of measure data and results. To participate, hospitals must pre-register on QualityNet’s website. The dry run of heart failure and pneumonia payment measures was initiated Sept. 8 and will run through Oct. 7.

CMS hosted a similar call earlier this week on the coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) mortality and readmission measures. Slides for the CABG and heart failure/pneumonia calls are posted on QualityNet’s website. CMS will accept hospital and stakeholder questions and comments via email during the dry run, which began Sept. 2 and will continue through Oct. 1. Questions about the CABG measures should be sent to, and questions about the heart failure and pneumonia payment measures should be directed to

In addition, CMS has announced a separate dry run for its Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) data from Sept. 15 to Oct. 14. The process will allow hospitals to see how their data would appear in an HCAHPS star rating system to be added to Hospital Compare in April 2015. During the dry run, hospitals can provide feedback to CMS on how to improve the new star rating system. Preview data is accessible through the QualityNet Portal.
