CMS Further Delays Implementation of Outpatient Quality Measure

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced it will further delay implementation of one outpatient quality measure, OP-31, Cataracts – Improvement in Patient’s Visual Function within 90 Days Following Cataract Surgery (NQF #1536), until Jan. 1, 2015. CMS had previously delayed implementation of the measure to April 1, 2014, along with two other measures: OP-29, Endoscopy/Polyp Surveillance: Appropriate Follow-up Interval for Normal Colonoscopy in Average Risk Patients (NQF #0658) and OP-30, Endoscopy/Polyp Surveillance: Colonoscopy Interval for Patients with a History of Adenomatous Polyps – Avoidance of Inappropriate Use (NQF #0659). Facilities should continue to collect data on OP-29 and OP-30 during the collection period of April 1, 2014, to Dec. 31, 2014, to populate their patient sample for reporting after the data collection period ends. The hospital outpatient quality reporting (OQR) support contractor will provide technical assistance for these measures in the coming months.
