CMS Formally Proposes Extension of Stage 2 Meaningful Use
Stage 2 training call scheduled for May 29

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) issued a proposed rule yesterday that would extend stage 2 of meaningful use through 2016 and delay the start of stage 3 until 2017. CMS originally indicated it would propose this delay in a blog post late last year. The proposed rule would also allow for increased hospital flexibility in meeting meaningful use requirements, including using the 2011 edition Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT) to meet the requirements in place for 2013. CMS will require all hospitals to use the 2014 edition CEHRT to demonstrate meaningful use beginning in 2015. CMS will accept comments on the attached proposed rule for 60 days.

CMS also announced it will host a training call on stage 2 of the electronic health record incentives program on May 29 at 10:30 a.m. (PT). To register for the call, visit and select “Stage 2 Meaningful Use Requirements, Reporting Options, and Data Submission Processes for Eligible Professionals.”
