CMS Extends Two-Midnight Rule for Inpatient Hospital Reviews by Six Months
Process to continue through Sept. 30

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has decided to extend the inpatient hospital prepayment “probe and educate” review process for an additional six months, through Sept. 30. Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) will continue to select claims for review with dates of admission between March 31, 2014, and Sept. 30, 2014, and will continue to review and deny claims found not in compliance with the two-midnight rule.

MACs also will conduct educational sessions with hospitals and providers. Upcoming sessions include a special Open Door Forum on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. (PT) and an MLN Connects National Provider Call on Feb. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (PT).  Details and guidance related to the recent announcement can be found at the CMS website. Background information, analysis and additional resources are available on CHA’s website at www.calhospital.org/resource/inpatient-admission-and-medical-review-resources.
