CMS Data on Medicare Physician Payments Available for the First Time

For the first time, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released Medicare data on payments to physicians, comparing payments and submitted charges for medical services and procedures by provider, specialty and location. The data includes information for over 880,000 distinct health care providers who collectively received $77 billion in Medicare payments in 2012, under the Medicare Part B fee-for-service program. Last May, CMS released data on hospital charges for common inpatient and outpatient services across the country. The physician dataset is available for download on the CMS website.
