The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued updates to the Nursing Home Compare website. Among the most significant changes is the addition of a new “abuse icon,” which will be used to highlight facilities with instances of non-compliance related to abuse, based on specified criteria.

CMS believes that, by making this information accessible and understandable, consumers will be better able to make informed choices about their care. Additional updates to the Five Star Quality Rating System include changes to the quality measure thresholds and removal of quality measures related to pain. Changes will become effective with the next update, which is scheduled for Oct. 23.
