CMS Announces First 27 ACOs for April 1 Start Date

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has selected the first 27 accountable care organizations (ACOs) — including two from California — to participate in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. The ACOs will be responsible for improving and coordinating care of their Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. Those that are successful in lowering the costs of care will share the savings with the Medicare program. The selected California-based ACOs include Premier ACO Physician Network, serving about 12,500 beneficiaries in the greater Long Beach and Orange County areas, and AppleCare Medical ACO, LLC, serving about 8,000 beneficiaries throughout southern Los Angeles and Orange counties. The 27 organizations were selected from 50 applicants for the first round of ACOs with an April 1 start date. Over half of the 27 ACOs are physician led. CMS is currently reviewing more than 150 applications for the July 1 start date. A CMS press release and fact sheet are attached.
