CMS Announces Effort to Support APRN Education

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), for the first time, is supporting the training of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) through the Medicare Graduate Nurse Education Demonstration. The four-year, $200 million effort was created as part of the Affordable Care Act and will increase the number of APRNs by reimbursing training costs for five network hospitals. This is a significant advancement that will improve the accessibility, quality and value of health care for Medicare beneficiaries. The five hospitals selected to participate are Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa.; Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C.; Scottsdale Healthcare Medical Center, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, Ill.; and Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center Hospital, Houston, Texas.
