CMS Announces 121 New Participants in ACO Programs
First round of Next Generation ACO Model participants announced

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced 121 new participants in Medicare Accountable Care Organization (ACO) initiatives, including the Medicare Shared Savings Program, the ACO Investment Model and the Next Generation ACO (NGACO) Model. Of the new participants, 100 have joined the Medicare Shared Savings Program, including three that serve California. In addition, 39 Shared Savings Program ACOs will also participate in the ACO Investment Model, which provides pre-paid shared savings to encourage new ACOs to form in rural and underserved areas and encourages current Shared Savings Program ACOs to transition to performance-based risk arrangements.

The NGACO Model is a new initiative that builds upon experience from the Pioneer ACO Model and the Shared Savings Program. CMS announced that 21 organizations, including three in California, have been selected to participate in the first round of the model. CMS also announced that organizations interested in participating in the second round of the NGACO Model must submit letters of intent no later than May 1 and complete electronic applications by June 1. More information about the NGACO Model is available online.
