CMS Administrator Tavenner to Leave Agency in February

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Marilyn Tavenner announced today that she will leave the agency at the end of February. Tavenner follows other top CMS officials Cindy Mann and Melanie Bella, who announced their departures in December. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell announced that Principal Deputy Administrator Andy Slavitt will serve as acting administrator. Until the agency has Senate-confirmed leadership in place, however, making tough policy decisions will be difficult. And, under the Republican-controlled Senate, confirmation of a new administrator will be challenging.
