CHPSO Offers Insight to Affordable Care Act PSO Mandate

The California Hospital Patient Safety Organization (CHPSO) invites CHA members and non-members to join Executive Director Rory Jaffe, MD, MBA, as he helps demystify one of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA’s) least-understood mandates during a free webinar May 21, 11 a.m. – noon (PT). Health insurance exchanges, a key component of the ACA, will require most participating hospitals to:

  • Report to a patient safety organization (PSO);
  • Utilize a patient safety evaluation system (PSES); and
  • Implement a comprehensive discharge program.

Dr. Jaffe’s presentation at the CHPSO Annual Meeting was eye opening for many participants. The upcoming webinar will review and expand on his Annual Meeting session, including:

  • Understanding the ACA mandate for reporting to PSOs;
  • Comprehending the urgency of implementing a PSES and how to form one; and
  • Learning about the AHRQ common formats and their advantages.

All hospitals – whether they have established a PSES and are already reporting to a PSO or not – are encouraged to join CHPSO at the May 21 webinar to review imperative ACA information and ensure their readiness.

CHPSO will distribute an email on Thursday, May 16 with webinar participation information to all members of the CHPSO mailing list. Contact to verify you are on the mailing list or sign up for the CHPSO mailing list to receive the webinar participation information.

One of the largest and oldest PSOs in the nation, CHPSO analyzes patient safety data, develops and shares best practices, and helps individual hospitals accelerate safety improvements. CHPSO membership is a complimentary benefit for members of CHA and the regional hospital associations. Membership is also available to hospitals outside California for a fee. Contact CHPSO at (916) 552-2600 or for membership questions. The current member list is at
