CHCF Releases Report on 2016 California Health Insurance Enrollment

The California Health Care Foundation has released a new report addressing health insurance enrollment in 2016. Using enrollment data from the Department of Managed Health Care and the California Department of Insurance, the report finds:

  • In 2016, health insurers covered 32.6 million enrollees – 27 million through commercial coverage or public managed care and 5.7 million through self-insured employers.
  • More than 50 percent of individually purchased insurance was bought through Covered California.
  • Kaiser had the most enrollees, the majority of whom were in the large group market. Anthem Blue Cross had the most administrative services only enrollees. The largest insurers included two county-based health plans, L.A. Care and Inland Empire Health Plan, which cover public managed care enrollees.

Data included in the report represent information by market, product, regulator, insurer and year.
