CHA Webinar Will Explain New Requirements for Sterile Compounding
Learn how to comply with new and upcoming state regulations and federal standards

New regulations and standards on hospital pharmacy compounding of hazardous and nonhazardous medications will significantly impact pharmacy processes and procedures, as well as facility structures. To help explain the upcoming regulations and standards, CHA will hold a webinar June 28 from 10 a.m. – noon (PT).

Proposed regulations from the Board of Pharmacy (BoP), which will become effective Jan. 1, 2017, require changes to cleaning, testing and personnel training. A key anticipated regulation will require hospital pharmacies to have a physically separate room that meets specific ventilation requirements for hazardous sterile compounding. In addition, new standards from the United Stated Pharmacopeia (USP) Convention are being finalized. USP standard 797, which will take effect in February 2018, will be used for survey purposes; USP Standard 800, which was finalized in February 2016 and will take effect July 2018, addresses employee safety when handling hazardous medications.

At the webinar, BoP Executive Officer Virginia Herold and Supervising Inspector Christine Acosta — along with hospital pharmacists from CHA’s Medication Safety Committee — will discuss the new requirements and their impact on hospital procedures and operations. Participants will be offered helpful tools and resources to assist in preparing for compliance.
