CHA Reminds Low-Volume Hospitals and MDHs to Notify MACs of Eligibility

CHA reminds hospitals eligible for the low-volume payment adjustment that they must notify Noridan, the Medicare Administrative Contractor, in writing by Monday, March 31. To qualify for the adjustment, the documentation must demonstrate that the hospital meets the discharge and mileage criteria. In addition, hospitals that were classified as Medicare-dependent hospitals (MDH) as of Oct. 1, 2013, do not need to reapply for MDH classification unless they were classified as a sole-community hospital (SCH) on or after Oct. 1, 2013, or if they requested a cancellation of their rural classification under 42 CFR 412.103(b). Under those two exceptions, a hospital would have to reapply for MDH classification in accordance with the regulations by submitting a written request, along with qualifying documentation to its contractor, to be considered for MDH status.

The contractor must make its decision and notify the hospital within 30 days, and the determination of MDH status would be effective 30 days after the date of the contractor’s written notification to the hospital. A Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services transmittal with additional instructions is attached, and the final rule implementing the requirements is available at
