CHA, Regional Associations Launch Hospital Quality Institute
Statewide organization to strengthen, support & align patient safety improvement activities

CHA and the Regional Associations have created a new statewide organization that will strengthen, support and align patient safety and quality improvement activities in hospitals throughout California.

The Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) will incorporate all of the Associations’ existing patient safety and quality improvement activities — including the California Hospital Patient Safety Organization, Patient Safety First, the California Hospital Engagement Network (known as CALHEN) and other local and regional collaboratives — into one streamlined organization. HQI will be responsible for establishing a statewide strategy and vision for patient safety and quality improvement, providing clarity and enhancing member value. 

HQI will be governed by CHA, the Regional Associations and hospital representatives. The Institute will be led by CEO Julianne Morath, RN, MS, a nationally known expert in health care quality and patient safety. Morath, who currently is the chief quality and patient safety officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, serves on the board of the National Patient Safety Foundation and the Board of Commissioners of The Joint Commission. She will join HQI on March 11.
